Remembering Philip Guston

Back in the 70's I went to the New York Studio School on W.8th ST. in NYC and I studied with Philip Guston. He once said," When you're in the studio painting, there are a lot of people in there with you... your teachers,friends,painters from history, critics...and one by one if you're really painting, they walk out. And if you're really painting YOU walk out."

I painted on Wisner Road for over 20years. I fell in love with the flat landscape. It reminded me of California where I lived for the time I was 7-22yrs. Before coming out to NY to study art at the New York Studio School.

This a pastel at Goose Pond Park just off of 17M heading into Monroe, NY. A breath of fresh air after the long, hard winter we experienced.

Pencil drawing of the figure/pastels

I set the pastels in dakota trays to have a full view of choice of pastels. Being organized is very important to have easy availability to paint /draw with the pastels.

The figure

I am working on a series of figure pastels. This is the beginning based on life drawing session Wednesday at Sielgman's Gallery in Sugar Loaf.,NY. I start out first by drawing the figure in pencil then transfer the drawing to a sanded pastel paper.

Guitar

Cubism as seen through the eyes of a non 3D artist. For someone who works primarily on a flat surface drawing and painting it was a stretch to do this guitar out of cardboard. I first saw it at MOMA in the Picasso guitar show which is still on exhibit. Heidi Lanino Bilezikan, a very fine artist, generously let me photo a sample of her guitar sculpture work for me to refer to.

As I worked at putting this together it literally helped me to see outside the BOX. I had to turn it look at the view from different perspectives not just straight on.
